Wigs for children are not very popular because children tend to want their own hair and do not put up with having a wig put on. The exceptions are wigs for cancer patients who have lost all their hair and wigs for children’s beauty pageants.  Many wigs for children are designed to look as realistic as possible so the child doesn’t look too grown up or not like a child when wearing the wig

People often donate their own human hair for wigs for children because hair of all types and colours are needed to help a child look as natural as possible.  There are online places where you can donate 8-12 inches of hair or more, depending on the manufacturer.  You need to cut the hair in a pony tail and have it braided or secured at two inch intervals so the hair doesn’t tangle in the shipping of the hair.  The hair is taken in small bundles and is woven into wefts or tracts of hair that is then sewn onto a child-sized net form.  If it is to be a lace front wig, then the wig will have lace sewn onto the front of the wig and hair will be inserted into the lace.  The lace is cut back and is bonded to the scalp so that it looks as though the hair is coming directly out of the head.  A full lace wig is more expensive but allows the child to put the hair into a ponytail.  These types of lace wigs are harder to maintain because the bonding can come loose and may need touching up every few days but they are very realistic.

Wigs for children designed for beauty pageants look a lot like adult wigs and are very full and fancy.  They cost in the range of $200 or more but can make the child look more grown up and keeps the child from having her own hair styled so often for pageants.  The pageant wig can be styled on the form and then can be attached to the girl’s head.

Wigs for children can come for boys as well.  This would generally be for boys that have lost their hair due to chemotherapy.  Boys wigs tend to be cheaper than girls wigs, in the range of $150-$185.  They are not commonly used and many boys prefer to be bald than to have wigs for cancer patients.

They also make very inexpensive headband wigs for children.  A headband is affixed to the wig and the hair is behind the headband.  Both are worn together for a natural look that doesn’t show your own hair underneath it.  The downside is that headband can’t be removed and you are stuck with the same headband, whether or not it matches your outfit.  The upside is that they are very cheap, often in the range of $100 or less.  They are perfect wigs for cancer patients who won’t be wearing the wig very long.
Overall, there is a purpose for wigs for children that have nothing to do with making a fashion statement. Such wigs for children help children with health issues regain their self esteem.
